Painting Through Psychosis

2018

Paint & Pastel on Plywood

125 x 92cm

This self portrait was painted during an intense psychotic episode. The frankness with which BerriBlue approaches mental health and self harm is beautiful and haunting.

The figure appears vulnerable and flawed, and there is no sense of body positivity. The pose and the background imagery imply a sense of defensive confusion, but the eyes lock piercingly with the viewer.

This piece was chosen as the chief promotional image for an event in Porto's Miguel Bombarda arts district in 2018.
