This expressive self portrait was painted during the peak of a severe psychotic episode. The progression of the artist's mental state is discernible in different areas of the work. Confusion and discord are apparent in the bold expressive strokes around the figure's face. The eyes are very much the focus of the piece; picked out in glossy nail polish, which catch the light and draw the viewer to uncomfortably meet the figure's gaze.
